First Driving Lesson Tips — What to Expect
Every driver was a beginner once. Here's how to walk into your first lesson confident and ready.
Before Your First Lesson
You've booked your first driving lesson in Derby — brilliant. Now let's make sure you're prepared so you can focus on learning, not worrying.
What to Bring
- Provisional driving licence — your instructor must see this by law
- Comfortable shoes — flat soles with good pedal feel (no flip-flops or heavy boots)
- Glasses or contacts if you need them for the eyesight check
- Payment — confirm payment method when you book via call or WhatsApp
What Happens in Lesson One
Most first lessons follow a similar pattern:
- Eyesight check — reading a number plate from 20 metres
- Cockpit drill — seats, mirrors, seatbelt (DSLM routine)
- Controls briefing — steering, pedals, gears (manual) or drive modes (automatic)
- Moving off and stopping — your first taste of driving!
- Basic junctions — if time and confidence allow
Don't expect to drive 60mph on the A38 in lesson one — and that's perfectly fine. Building foundations correctly saves time later.
Top Tips for Nervous Learners
- It's normal to be nervous — every pass photo started with shaking hands
- Ask questions — there are no stupid questions in a driving lesson
- Don't compare yourself — everyone learns at their own pace
- Consider automatic — if clutch anxiety is holding you back, read our automatic vs manual guide
- Book a block — consistency beats one lesson every fortnight. Our £300 for 10 lessons deal helps
After Your First Lesson
You'll likely feel tired — driving demands intense concentration. Review what you learned, get a good night's sleep, and book your next lesson while the momentum is fresh.
